Raheem Sterling has been one of the invaluable members in the Manchester City squad for the last few years. Manchester City appeared to have overpaid for the young England international when signing him for £50 million in 2015. Sterling became the most expensive English player at the time of his transfer, but he has become one of the best players in the Premier League during these last four years. City are looking to confirm this status by making the 24-year-old as the best-paid player in the division.
Sterling put pen to paper on a new contract only in November 2018. This contract, which pays just over £275,000 per week, runs until the summer of 2023. However, City are keen to tie down the forward with a new contract, according to Sky Sports.
Kevin De Bruyne is the highest-paid player at the club with wages of £350,000 per week. It is understood that Sterling’s new contract will make the best-paid player at City. He will also become the new top earner in the Premier League, as Alexis Sanchez is no longer on the books of United. Sanchez is on a contract worth around £400,000 per week, but he has recently joined Inter Milan on a loan deal.
There is likely to be any urgency from City or Sterling to sign this new contract. Negotiations have just started and it can progress over the next few weeks. Sterling has been going through a strong season with seven goals in the league. It puts him only behind Sergio Aguero, who has nine league goals. Besides, Sterling has shown great form in the Champions League with five goals and three assists in the five games. His overall record stands at an impressive 83 goals and 70 assists in 209 games for the club.
Apart from dominating stats for Manchester City, Sterling has also been a revelation for England. He has come up with 12 goals in 56 games for England with a remarkable eight of those coming in 2019 alone. He recently came up with a four-goal haul during the October round of qualifiers.
City’s decision to start negotiations for a new contract in just over 12 months will come as a surprise. However, the club are concerned about the threat from Real Madrid turning the player’s head. The Los Blancos are expected to continue their spending spree in the summer. Since Eden Hazard has failed to click as expected, Zinedine Zidane’s team are in need of a strong attacking asset. Furthermore, Gareth Bale is also expected to leave next summer after having a complete breakdown of relationship with Madrid. Sterling has been able to perform admirably in the English game which is substantially more physical than the Spanish game.
Madrid are reportedly preparing an offer of £70 million along with Gareth Bale for the signature of Sterling. Back in the summer, Sterling’s representatives had a secret meeting with Jose Angel Sanchez, who is the general director. Sterling is valued at £150 million but City would not be interested in selling the player who is approaching the peak of his career.
