Pep Guardiola has come out with two major revelations about Leroy Sane – the player is showing signs of being unhappy and the club want to keep him only if the player wants to stay. Sane’s future has been subjected to much speculation over the last few months, as the German winger has lost his place as the first-choice in the team. Bayern Munich’s interest at this time not only provides Sane with the opportunity to become the first choice once again, but it is also a way to return to Germany.

Sane featured in 31 league games last season but only 21 came from the start. Crucially, most of these 21 matches came in the first half of the campaign. Even then, Sane returned with excellent figures of 10 goals and 10 assists. The winger failed to feature in the Champions League last season. There are subtle hints from Guardiola that Sane’s future may lie elsewhere. According to Sky Sports, he said:

“The club made him an offer last year. As I said many times, we want people happy to be here. He knows, they all know, it’s difficult (to play regularly) because of the quality we have.

“I spoke to the club 10 times (to say) I want people here to be happy. If they don’t want, they go.”

Guardiola has a record of falling out with players and he never appears to give players a second chance. The likes of Yaya Toure are good examples of this trend. The former Barcelona and Bayern Munich manager was rather diplomatic when asked about Sane’s future at City. The winger has a contract with City only until the summer of 2021. Rather than let him leave on a cut-price deal summer, City would like to make his future clear before the end of this window.

There is also a greater risk of Sane’s price going down if he does not feature regularly in the 2019-20 campaign.

Bayern are actively looking for wingers after the departure of Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben. There is an excellent opportunity for Sane to establish himself in the Bayern team straightaway, as Kingsley Coman and Serge Gnabry are the only two natural wingers in the team. The German giants have been trying to spice up these positions with interest in the likes of Callum Hudson-Odoi of Chelsea, but there has been no progress on this front so far.

After missing out on the Germany squad for the World Cup 2018, Sane does not want to risk his place in the national team ahead of the Euro 2020. Due to this reason, the upcoming campaign is extremely important for the 23-year-old. City have an extremely deep squad and the competition for places is sky-high. It remains the case even after the departure of Fabian Delph. So far, City have concentrated their transfer efforts for the summer primarily on defenders. The club have enough strength in depth to deal with the departure of Sane.

Guardiola decided to go with a mixture of experience and youth for the pre-season friendly against West Ham. City were able to get a comfortable 4-1 win over the Hammers as part of the Premier League Asia Trophy’s first game. After having just picked up the league title for the second consecutive campaign, City are gunning for a third consecutive league title for the first time in the club’s history. A bigger priority, though, would be the Champions League title.
